So far this year has been full of interesting events. It started out with the most entertaining New Years I’ve had yet, when we incorporated 2018 vibes as both the motto and our new way of life. What exactly does this mean though? I’ve been living it, but how does one define it.
I was asked that question this weekend when I responded to something with “2018 Vibes Only.” I realized two things: 1. I need to chill with that 2. It really is all about mentality. You put yourself first without being totally self-centered. You’re still a nice human, but no more hiding feelings or doing things you don’t want to do. You’re able to pick yourself up when you’re down. Every single day has a positive, and you’re going to embrace it.
I made a pledge not to drink until my upcoming Vegas trip in March to focus on #health but also to spend more time exploring Chicago. Luckily, I had another friend who was interested in the same thing, so we’ve spent our weekends going to new restaurants and museums. I have absolutely loved waking up on a Saturday morning at 8 am feeling refreshed and ready to take on the day. The best part of that is I usually go to bed at 9 pm on Fridays these days. Definitely Grandma status, but I’m proud.
This past weekend I broke that pledge and went out Friday AND Saturday nights, getting home at 4 am both times. Why do I do this to myself? I remembered drinking is fun af, and in the moment, I thought to myself “why don’t I do this to myself more often?” The answer was quickly revealed when I woke up the next day feeling like I had done a lot more than just drink. Both nights out were SO fun, especially because we looked precious, but I learned I need to pick one night or the other. After all, #2018VibesOnly. It’ll be nice to rest up before Vegas and save some money as well.
Sticking with the theme of bettering myself this year, I wrote out a list of goals (or Resolutions but I truly dislike that word). I separated each goal to fit into a certain month to make sure it’s attainable. So far, so good. In March, I will be taking a photography class which I am incredibly excited for. I have a great lens but I’m using it to its full potential. My iPhone 7 portrait mode is sufficing for now. In April, I’m hoping to get involved in more volunteering. Now that I’m more comfortable in my job and its hours, I’m looking forward to spending more time in service. I look forward to sharing what organization(s) I end up with!
One task that I have ongoing throughout 2018 is to read at the bare minimum one book per month. I’m great about keeping up with all my shows, but reading is something I never seem to find time for, even though I really enjoy it. The first book I read in January was the Autobiography of Gucci Mane which was crazy interesting. I highly recommend to anyone who is a fan. It was so cool to hear how Gucci got started, about his multiple stints and jail, and finally coming out a changed man with incredible beats. I’m in the midst of Year in Provence in honor of the two-year anniversary of my arrival to France. The first few chapters have been hilarious and so relatable, and I’m looking forward to reading more. Hopefully I can get at least one more book in this month and beat my goal of 1 book per month 🙂
2018 has been fun, challenging, exciting and overall a learning experience. It’s only been 2.5 months, but I’ve adapted this new attitude and taken some time to put myself first and it’s paid off. There’s been several moments where I wasn’t in the best mood, but I was able to talk myself out of it and create a really great day. Granted, this won’t work every time, but the success rate is high so far. I really am excited for this year and have such great ~vibes~ about what is to come. Stay tuned for details as I attempt to execute my 2018 goals! And more importantly, look out for all the Vegas fun to come in just a few weeks. I’m not scared for the ratchetry, you are.
